SHAWNEE BACKGROUND Shawnee, Kansas, one of the fastest growing communities, has a population of about 60,000. Shawnee has wonderful access via I-35, I-435, K-7 and nearby I-70. Shawnee was one of the first settlements in the state. ManyShawnee’s pre-Civil War settlers are still active in the community today. The city is named after the Shawnee Indians who were brought in the 1820'a to the area. The many white settlements divided the original Shawnees. Treaties led to their being relocated into Kansas. The United States gave the Shawnee Indians 1.6 million acres of land in eastern Kansas, including all of Johnson CountyIn exchange for their Missouri land . Thirty years laterIn a treaty, the Shawnee Indians sold back to the U.S. all but 200,000 acres reserved for their homes. The U.S. government then sold off the territory to new settlers to the area. Shawneetown was platted soon thereafter in 1856. A few years later Shawnee was in the middle of the Civil War and soon border problemsand fights led to the town's destruction. Quite a bit of the population relocated to Olathe, and Shawnee became a small farm community. Shawnee's population grew in the 1950's when people left overpopulated urban areas. Shawnee since then has grown three times the population it was.
