Leavenworth is the seat county and the most populated city as well. Leavenworth is a part of the Kansas City Metro Area. Geography The county has a total area of 468 square miles with a land compose of 463 square miles and 5 square miles of water according to the U.S Census Bureau. History In August 30, 1866, Leavenworth County was created and become a free territory and one of the first 33 counties that were created by the first territorial government. The county was named after Henry Leavenworth an officer in 1812 War. The county had the first Kansas State University in the State. Demographics The county’s population was estimated around 75,227 in the year 2009. It was said to be the fourth fastest growing and sixth largest population in Kansas. As for racial composition, majority of the residents are White (84.18%). Black or African American (10.42%), Native American (0.74%) and remaining percentage consist of Asian, Pacific Islander and other races. Townships The county is separated into ten townships. Cities of Lansing and Leavenworth are believed to be governmentally independent and barred from the census figures for the townships. |
